Schwarzman Scholars Program at Tsinghua University 2025
Schwarzman Scholars Program is currently giving out a one-year, fully-funded master’s program at Tsinghua University in Beijing. The Scholarship is designed to build a global community of future leaders.
The Schwarzman Scholars Program
Schwarzman Scholars is to address the issues of the 21st century and beyond. The Rhodes Scholarship, established in 1902 to advance world peace and understanding, was the model used.
There are up to 200 Scholars from the US, China, and other countries who are supported by Schwarzman Scholars each year to pursue a one-year master’s degree in global affairs at Tsinghua University in Beijing, which is the best university in Asia and the foundation of China’s leadership in politics, business and technology.
A year of study and cultural immersion in Beijing will be spent by scholars selected for this very competitive program, where they will attend classes, explore the area, and get to know China.
Admissions started in fall 2015, and Schwarzman Scholars is now one of the most competitive fellowships and graduate programs in the world.
The Tsinghua University
In 1911, Tsinghua University was founded as “Tsing Hua Imperial College”.
The name was changed to “Tsing Hua College” in 1912. In 1925, the university division was established. In 1928, the name “National Tsing Hua University” was chosen.
The faculty valued the interplay between Chinese and Western cultures, humanities, and sciences, and the ancient and the modern.
The “Four Tutors” of the Institute of Chinese Classics, Wang Guowei, Liang Qichao, Chen Yinque, and Zhao Yuanren, were Tsinghua intellectuals who promoted this idea and had a great impact on the development of Tsinghua.
National Tsing Hua University, National Peking University, and Nankai University merged to form Lin-shih-ta-hsueh in 1937 after the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression broke out.
After the war, in 1946, the university returned to its old site in Beijing. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the university was reorganized as an engineering polytechnic in 1952.
Mr. Jiang Nanxiang became the president of the university in November 1952. He played a crucial role in making Tsinghua the nation’s cradle of scientists and engineers with both professional skills and moral integrity.

1. Candidates must provide specific instances of these qualities through their application.
2. All degree requirements must be finished by August 1st of the year of enrollment.
3. Candidates must provide a detailed explanation of how becoming a Schwarzman Scholar can help them become more influential in their field.
4. Candidates must be between the ages of 18 and 28 by August 1, 2026.
5. Since all instruction is in English, fluency in the language is essential.
6. Candidates who do not speak English as their first language are required to present their test results.
7. Minimum scores and approved tests are:
- TOEFL score: 100
- IELTS score: 7
- 185 for Cambridge C1 or C2
- English Duolingo Test: 130
8. A test score is not required for students who have studied English for two years or more at the undergraduate or graduate level.

1. What Type of Transcript Should I Submit?
The University prefer a scanned copy of an official transcript. They are aware that universities have different practices in issuing transcripts directly to students and sometimes issue a formal document, produced by the registrar, that might be considered unofficial.
Any transcript that has been produced by the registrar that clearly shows the student’s name and all courses and grades is accepted.
They will not accept a screenshot or a PDF of a website that allows students to check their grades and credits. If a student is selected as a Schwarzman Scholar, they will be required to submit a hard copy of the official transcript(s) upon enrollment.
2. What Should I Focus on in the Other Essay?
The personal statement asks candidates to describe their professional interests and goals and how they relate to some current affairs or global business issues of importance.
They are asking that candidates make a connection between their work/interests and the world around them.
They are interested in how the candidate describes the things they are passionate about and their ability to understand how they can both contribute to and learn from participation in the Schwarzman Scholars program.
3. Are the Selection Criteria the same for Applicants from China?
The application and selection process is jointly designed and administered by the admissions teams at Tsinghua and the Schwarzman Scholars office in New York.
Staff at Tsinghua manage recruiting and will manage selections for Greater China, including Macao, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, following the same process used for applicants from the rest of the world.
International candidates will often articulate how understanding China builds on their leadership and professional interests.
Chinese candidates, in contrast, often express an interest in further developing their leadership and intercultural skills in the international context of our program.
