Outstanding Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD candidates from across the world are eligible to apply for internships, as are outstanding members of the business community who want to gain experience in computer science research.
Internship opportunities are scarce, and the admissions process is competitive. Internship projects are chosen based on the intern’s maturity, experience level, and academic interests.
All internships are fully funded, including housing, living expenses, and return travel. Although lengthier internships are possible, most internships last between 12 and 14 weeks.

Requirements for Max Planck Internship Program
1. Applications for internships are open to exceptional international bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral students who are interested in computer science research and;
who possess a basic understanding of the field (roughly equivalent to the first three years of a typical bachelor’s program in computer science at the start of the internship).
Internship projects are customized to fit the individual backgrounds of each intern.
2. Similar-backgrounded industry applicants who are enthusiastic about academic CS research are also welcome to apply.
3. Please feel free to apply if you need a thesis project for your bachelor’s or master’s degree. If the student’s university permits it, the internship project may be turned into a thesis.
4. Pre-doctoral students can also thoroughly investigate computer science research through internships before committing to a career in research.
5. Candidates with a variety of academic backgrounds and interdisciplinary interests—such as those that straddle the fields of social science, economics, law, and the humanities—are encouraged to apply.
6. Applications from people in underrepresented groups in computer science or other STEM fields are especially encouraged.
7. Regardless of duration, all applicants are required to have an outstanding academic record because our internships are highly competitive.
Selection Process
Matching Process: Your application will be reviewed by research groups at participating institutes. You may be contacted for a phone interview during this time.
Notification: You will receive an email informing you of your application’s outcome. In order to formalize the dates of your internship and choose an internship project, you will also be placed in contact with the faculty mentor you have been allocated, should you be chosen.
