1. Abdul Majid Bader Graduate Scholarship

The Abdul Majid Bader Graduate Scholarship for Iranian students at the Dalhousie university. The scholarship was established by Abdul Majid Bader who after many years of studies in Britain and US lived in Canada and gained citizenship.

The essence of the scholarship is to support Iranian students in Canada, admitted into Dalhousie university, to foot their tuition and academic expenses.


Value: $40,000 per year for up to two years


Scholarship type: Entrance only for Master’s applicants, Entrance or in-program for Doctoral applicants


Degree level: Thesis-based master’s or doctoral


Available to: Iranian students (international students will also be considered)


Renewable: Yes

Deadline:  Please note that your department may have an earlier internal deadline if it wishes to provide feedback prior to the final submission deadline.

It is recommended that you check with your department to confirm their internal deadline in advance.

Eligibility criteria

  • Applicants from Iran will be given first preference for the award, with international students being considered if there are no Iranian candidates. 
  • Students with first-class academic standing (>3.7/4.3)  in their last two years of academic study may apply. Preference is given to students who have not yet started their degree or are in the first year of their PhD program at the time of application.
  • Students enrolled in a master’s program at the time of application are not eligible to apply.
  • Students who have applied to master’s programs are eligible to apply.
  • Students who are enrolled in or have applied to doctoral programs are eligible to apply.

2. Chinese Scholarship Council – PhD scholarship

The Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) provides scholarships to students intending to pursue doctoral studies abroad.

Dalhousie is a preferred host institution for CSC scholarship holders, with over a decade of experience supporting students funded through the CSC program.

CSC provides up to four years of funding for up to 20 new PhD students each year, during which time each student’s Dalhousie supervisor will also provide funding to cover tuition & incidental fees

Value: Tuition, airfare and living allowance for up to 4 years

Eligibility criteria

The CSC online application period typically opens in March of each year. As part of the CSC application process, you are required to be accepted into a Dalhousie PhD program with all academic and English language requirements having been met.

Your admission may be conditional upon successful receipt of the CSC scholarship.

  1. Create an account in the Faculty of Graduate Studies Online Scholarship Platform and complete the short application form for CSC students looking to complete their PhD at Dalhousie University (follow this path: FGS Bursaries and Grants, then Partner Scholarships and External Awards, then Chinese Scholarship Council – Completing your PhD at Dalhousie).
  2. Your application and an electronic response from your prospective Dalhousie supervisor must be received by March 30th.
  3. Complete your application for CSC funding at the CSC Portal.

3. Harold A Robertson Scholarship in Parkinson Research

The award is intended to support graduate students whose research area focuses on Parkinson’s Disease with an emphasis if possible at a basic sciences level or broader symptom level to address everyday living challenges and concerns such as caregiving, home design, technology, accommodations, or those tracing and predicting Parkinson’s families.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • You must be enrolled in a graduate studies program
  • You must demonstrate strong academic achievement
  • Your project will be in the research area focusing on Parkinson’s Disease with an emphasis if possible at a basic sciences level or broader symptom level to address everyday living challenges and concerns such as caregiving, home design, technology, accommodations, or those tracing and predicting Parkinson’s families.

4. John and Lena Graham Commonwealth Bursary

Donors John and Lena Graham established a fund in their name to mark the 75th anniversary in 1988 of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

It is used to assist graduate students who find themselves in need of financial aid while in Nova Scotia.

Recipients must be residents of Commonwealth countries other than Canada who, in the opinion of the selecting body, demonstrate need.

Eligibility criteria

  • Must be a resident of a Commonwealth country other than Canada and be in need of financial aid.

5. Killam International Research Award

To advance this mission, Dalhousie, with the support of the Killam Alumni Fund, has established the Killam International Research Award.

The intent is to provide global research experiences for our exceptional Killam Scholars at institutions abroad.

Two awards of up to $6,000 are available to current Killam Doctoral Scholarship holders to help offset the costs of undertaking research outside Canada for up to 3 months.

Eligibility criteria

  • To be eligible to apply for this supplement, you must:
  • Have accepted or currently hold a Level 2 Killam Predoctoral award.
  • Not have previously held a Killam International Research Award or any other international travel award (e.g., Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement).
  • Conduct research related to your graduate studies at Dalhousie University.
  • Conduct research which requires you to be physically present at the location abroad.
  • To remain eligible during the period abroad, you must:
  • Hold an active Killam award when your international research study period starts.
  • Be registered full-time in a Ph.D. program for the duration of your international research study.
  • Utilize the award within one year of receiving the award notice.
  • Return to complete your degree at Dalhousie University.
