Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (2024)
International students can apply for the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship, which covers master’s tuition fees. This scholarship offers a yearly average of €15,000.
Leiden University Excellence Scholarship
International students interested in pursuing a master’s degree at Leiden University Netherlands are encouraged to apply for the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship. These fully financed scholarships are awarded to worthy candidates.
The amount and kind of scholarships awarded are determined by the funds allocated to each faculty department. One of the top colleges in Europe for worldwide research, Leiden University was established in 1575.
The University’s motto is “Praesidium Libertatis,” which translates to “Bastion of Freedom.” Its seven faculties—situated in Leiden and The Hague—offer programs in the social sciences, humanities, and sciences.
There are 28,130 students and more than 6,700 staff members at the university.
Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Requirements
The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship for 2025 is open to applicants of the following nationalities:
1. Non-EEA/non-EFTA* citizens submitting an application to Leiden University for a master’s program. See the extra note below for students in the UK.
2. Applicants for the MSC in International Relations and Diplomacy or the LLM Advanced Studies program may be of any nationality.
Study Programme Requirements:
1. Candidates for all Leiden University master’s programs, except the non-advanced LLM and MSc programs at the Leiden Law School.
2. To be considered for admission to the Master’s program, students must have received excellent academic results from their previous study program(s).
3. The fact that the student graduated in the top 10% of his or her previous study program serves as an indicator.
4. It should be noted that this information is only intended to show the degree of competition; evidence of ranking is not necessary.
Scholarship Duration and Benefits
For the length of the study program, the LExS is granted. Three reward levels are available:
- €10,000 of the tuition cost.
- 15% of the tuition amount is due.
- The entire tuition amount less the mandatory tuition fee.
Selection Process
1. Up to six weeks after the LExS deadline, the faculty selection committees will nominate LExS recipients and notify the Scholarships Team.
2. All LExS applicants will be informed of the decisions by the Scholarships Team:

How to Apply
1. Candidates who meet the requirements can apply for the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship for 2025 by clicking the button below, which will take them to the scholarship application page.
2. Apply online for admission to Leiden University’s Master’s program, and if necessary, pay the application cost.
3. Tell the online application that you would like to apply for an LExS in the scholarship area.
4. Follow the instructions in your online application to upload your LExS motivation letter. This is a 500-word or less PDF document where you can explain why you should be awarded the prize.
5. Before the LExS application deadline, submit your online application along with your LExS application.
6. Please include an LExS motivation letter with your applications if you are applying for more than one study program and would like to apply for an LExS for each.
